Chattanooga combines a strong manufacturing base — anchored by the Volkswagen assembly plant — with logistics and distribution, a revitalized downtown and riverfront tourism economy around the Tennessee Aquarium, and a growing tech scene that earned it the nickname "Gig City." Security demand spans industrial site guards, gate and dock access control, and overnight yard patrol at plants and distribution centers, alongside event and hospitality coverage downtown and retail and commercial patrol. Nearby Cleveland and Hixson add manufacturing and retail work. As a Tennessee metro, Chattanooga bills at cost-competitive Southeast rates well below coastal markets.
The providers below are ranked on merit, but the final check is yours. Work through these four steps before you sign anything in Chattanooga:
Private security in Tennessee is licensed at the state level by the the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, Private Protective Services program. A legitimate company operating in Chattanooga holds a Contract Security Company license, which means it has cleared Tennessee PPS's ownership, background-check and insurance requirements. Ask for that license number in writing and verify it yourself — a certificate on the wall tells you nothing about current standing, since a license can be suspended or revoked.
Hiring an unlicensed company is a risk you carry. In Tennessee, operating without a license is misdemeanor (plus civil penalty) (Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-35-136 (general penalty, Class A misdemeanor); § 62-35-130 (civil penalty up to $2,000 per occurrence); § 62-35-134 (unlawful employments/activities)). Operating a contract or proprietary security company, or working as a guard, without a currently valid PPS license/registration is a Class A misdemeanor, and the Commissioner may separately assess a civil penalty of up to $2,000 per occurrence against the unlicensed operator.
Chattanooga scores 41/100 on our Crime Index (grade E), which makes it safer than 9% of the 759 US cities we track. The index is built from FBI Crime Data Explorer reports for a population of 193,881.

Crime rates describe a city, not a specific address — the right level of coverage depends on your block, your hours and what you're protecting. Use the neighborhood breakdown to see how Chattanooga varies internally before you scope a contract.
