Mobile patrol gives a property a marked, logged security presence without the cost of a full-time standing post. Instead of one officer assigned to one site, a patrol officer in a marked vehicle runs scheduled or random drive-by checks across a route of properties — arriving at unpredictable times, inspecting the site, logging each visit and responding to alarms or requests. For the many properties that need visible security and a documented response but can't justify a 24/7 post, patrol is the most cost-effective option in physical security. Patrol services are supplied by the same licensed guard companies as standing posts — a BSIS Private Patrol Operator (PPO) firm in California, an IDFPR-licensed agency in Illinois — and the "PPO" name itself reflects patrol's central place in the industry.
An officer covers a route of client properties over a shift, visiting each one or more times at varied intervals so the pattern can't be predicted. Modern patrol firms log every stop with GPS-verified, time-stamped records — often with photos or scanned checkpoints — so you receive proof of each visit rather than taking it on faith. That verifiable log is the difference between a real patrol program and a car that may or may not have driven by.
On each stop an officer checks doors, gates and windows, looks for signs of forced entry, trespassing or vandalism, verifies that lighting and equipment are as they should be, moves loiterers along and documents anything out of place. For construction sites, vacant properties, retail plazas and industrial yards, that recurring unpredictable presence is a strong deterrent to the after-hours theft and trespassing that fixed daytime hours miss.
Patrol firms commonly add alarm response — an officer dispatched to meet an alarm or a police call so a manager doesn't have to drive in at 3 a.m. — plus scheduled lock-and-unlock service, gate opening and closing, and welfare or safety escorts. Bundling these with the patrol route is far cheaper than a standing officer and covers exactly the moments most incidents happen.
A standing post makes sense when a site needs continuous eyes on one location. Patrol wins when risk is spread across time or across several properties: a strip center that needs presence but not a fixed guard, a vacant building, a yard that needs overnight checks, or a portfolio of sites a property manager wants covered on one contract. Many programs pair the two — a night post plus roving patrol, or cameras plus patrol response.
Because the cost is shared across a route, mobile patrol runs roughly $600–$2,500 per property per month depending on how many checks per night, property size and whether alarm response is included — a fraction of the roughly $8,000+ per month a single standing post costs. Frequency and response add-ons drive the price; more visits and dedicated response cost more.
Ask how visits are verified (GPS and time stamps, not a promise), how many properties share a route and what that means for response time, and whether alarm response and lock-up are included or billed separately. Confirm the company's state license and insurance, and make sure the marked vehicles and uniformed officers actually create the visible deterrent you're paying for.
Estimated prices per property/month. Per-property drive-by patrols (typically 1–4 checks per night) with logged visits. Frequency, property size and alarm-response add-ons drive the price. Far cheaper than a standing post — shared across a route.

Mobile patrol checks your property on marked-vehicle rounds instead of a stationed guard — often 60–80% cheaper. Here's how it works, what it costs, how it compares to a static guard and remote video, and how to verify the patrols actually happen.
