Armed Security Guards in the US

Armed security places an officer carrying a firearm — and the elevated training, permitting, insurance and liability that go with it — at a post where a credible deadly-force capability is genuinely warranted. It is not an upgrade to be bought by default. Armed officers make sense where a site handles cash or high-value goods, faces a specific elevated threat, or must protect people in a high-risk environment: banks and cash-handling operations, jewelry and cannabis retail, dispensaries, some healthcare and executive settings. In the US, armed officers require a firearm permit on top of the standard guard license, and are supplied by licensed guard companies — a BSIS Private Patrol Operator (PPO) firm in California, an IDFPR-licensed agency in Illinois, a FDACS Class "B" agency in Florida.

When armed is warranted

The decision should follow a real risk assessment, not a sense that armed simply looks more serious. Cash in transit, high-value inventory, a documented threat, or a duty to protect people in a dangerous setting justify the added capability and cost. Where the risk is opportunistic theft, trespassing or a need for visible presence, an unarmed officer is usually the safer, lower-liability and more appropriate choice — introducing a firearm you don't need adds risk rather than removing it.

Armed licensing and permits

An armed officer must hold two things: a valid guard registration and a separate firearm permit. In California that means a BSIS Guard Card plus a BSIS Exposed Firearm Permit (with an assessment and firearms training) and a separate Baton Permit if a baton is carried. In Illinois it means a PERC plus a Firearm Control Card and a valid FOID card. In Florida it means a Class "D" plus a Class "G" statewide firearm license, which requires a 28-hour firearms course and annual requalification. New York armed work additionally requires a pistol license, which is tightly restricted — which is why most New York City contract security is unarmed.

Training and qualification

Beyond the permit, professional armed officers requalify on the range on the schedule their state and the firm require, and are trained in use-of-force law, de-escalation and judgment — when not to draw is as important as marksmanship. Ask a provider how often its armed officers requalify, what use-of-force and de-escalation training they carry, and who reviews any incident.

Liability and insurance

An armed post carries materially higher liability, so the firm's insurance must reflect it. Confirm the company carries general-liability coverage that explicitly extends to armed operations, adequate limits, and a clear, written use-of-force policy. A serious provider treats the firearm as a last resort governed by policy, not a selling point.

What it costs

Armed posts bill roughly 35% above unarmed — about $30–$48 per hour, or roughly $10,800–$17,300 per month for a single 12-hour daily post — reflecting the armed permit, firearms qualification, higher officer wage and higher insurance. As with unarmed guards, 24/7 coverage of one position takes two to four officers. Weigh the premium against whether the risk truly calls for a firearm at all.
