Security consulting is expert, vendor-neutral advice: an independent professional assesses your risk, audits what you have, and designs the guarding, technology and procedures you actually need — before you spend money on them. Where a guard company sells officers and an integrator sells cameras, a true consultant sells judgment, and the value is in spending your security budget on the right things rather than the most-marketed ones. Consultants serve building owners, corporations, schools, healthcare systems, HOAs and anyone making a significant security decision who wants an objective read first. Some investigative or forensic consulting requires a state license (a private investigator license in many states); pure advisory work generally does not, which makes credentials and independence the things to verify.

What a consultant delivers

A consulting engagement produces something concrete: a written risk or vulnerability assessment, a security master plan, a review of an existing guard program or technology system, guard-force optimization, policy and emergency-procedure development, or expert support for a specific decision or incident. The deliverable should be actionable — findings, prioritized recommendations and a realistic budget — not a generic report.

Risk and vulnerability assessment

The foundation is a structured threat, vulnerability and risk assessment: what could happen, how exposed you are, and what the consequences would be — grounded in a site survey, crime and incident data, and the organization's operations. That assessment is what lets you scale spending to real risk instead of guessing, and it's the single most valuable thing a consultant produces.

CPTED and physical design

Consultants apply Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) — using lighting, sightlines, landscaping, access paths and natural surveillance to reduce crime opportunity — which is often cheaper and more durable than adding guards or cameras. For new construction or a redesign, involving a consultant early can build security in at a fraction of the cost of retrofitting it later.

Credentials and independence

Because advisory work is lightly licensed, professional credentials matter: ASIS International's Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and Physical Security Professional (PSP) are the recognized standards, and genuine independence — no commission on the guards or equipment recommended — is what keeps the advice objective. Confirm any required state licensing for investigative work, and ask for relevant sector experience.

What it costs

Consulting bills per project or per hour — typically $100–$250 per hour, with a single-site risk assessment often starting around $2,500 and multi-site programs, master planning and ongoing advisory scaling into the tens of thousands. It's usually money that saves money: a good assessment routinely redirects a far larger security budget toward what actually reduces risk.
