Alarm monitoring is the 24/7 service that turns a burglar, fire or panic alarm into an actual response. Sensors on their own only make noise; monitoring connects them to a central station where trained operators receive each signal, verify it, and dispatch police, fire or a guard — around the clock, whether or not anyone is on site. It is the piece that makes an alarm system worth having. In the US, monitoring and the systems behind it are provided by licensed alarm companies — a BSIS Alarm Company Operator (ACO) license in California, an IDFPR Private Alarm Contractor Agency license in Illinois, a Florida DBPR ’EF’ alarm system contractor license (Electrical Contractors’ Licensing Board, Ch. 489) — a different license pool from guard services.
When a sensor trips — a door contact, motion detector, glass-break, smoke detector or panic button — the panel sends a signal to the central station. An operator identifies the account, follows the account's action plan (often attempting verification by call or by video/audio), and dispatches the appropriate responder while notifying the account's contacts. The whole point is a fast, verified, human response at 3 a.m. when the property is empty.
Quality is verifiable. A UL-listed central station (built and operated to UL 827) meets standards for redundancy, backup power, staffing and response, and many top stations also carry The Monitoring Association's Five Diamond designation. These credentials are worth asking for — a low-cost monitoring plan run out of an under-resourced facility can mean slow or missed dispatches when it matters most.
Most alarm activations are false, and many jurisdictions now fine for false dispatches or require an alarm permit and verified response before police will roll. Good monitoring reduces false alarms through verification — a callback, or increasingly video and audio verification that confirms a real event before dispatch — which protects your response priority and keeps you clear of false-alarm penalties.
Alarm work is licensed separately from guarding, so confirm the company holds the right state alarm license and carries insurance. Monitoring commonly integrates with video surveillance and access control, and can trigger a guard or patrol response as well as police — a combined program worth coordinating under one provider where possible.
Monitoring is a monthly subscription, roughly $30–$80 for residential service and $50–$200 for commercial, scaling with the number of zones, cameras and the response requirements. Because it's a remote central-station service, the fee doesn't track local guard wages the way on-site posts do. Equipment and installation are billed separately from the recurring monitoring fee.
