Fire watch is a temporary, code-driven safety service: trained officers patrol a building on a set schedule to detect fire, smoke and hazards while a fire-protection system is out of service or during high-risk operations, keeping a documented log the fire authority can inspect. It is rarely a matter of preference — it is usually required by code and enforced by the local fire marshal. When a sprinkler or fire-alarm system is impaired, during and after hot work, or when a building is occupied before its fire systems are complete, fire watch is what legally keeps the doors open. Fire-watch officers are supplied by licensed guard companies — a BSIS Private Patrol Operator (PPO) firm in California, an IDFPR-licensed agency in Illinois — and the requirement itself comes from NFPA codes and OSHA, adopted and enforced by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), typically the fire department.
The common triggers are an out-of-service or impaired sprinkler system or fire-alarm system (NFPA 25 and NFPA 72 address impairments; NFPA 1 and NFPA 101 require a fire watch when required systems are down), hot work such as welding, cutting or grinding (NFPA 51B and OSHA 1926.352), and occupancy of a structure before fire-protection systems are commissioned. In each case the AHJ can require a fire watch as a condition of keeping the building occupied or the work proceeding.
A fire-watch officer walks a defined route through all affected areas at set intervals — often every 15 to 60 minutes depending on the AHJ's instruction — watching for any sign of fire, checking that exits and equipment are clear, and, critically, recording each patrol in a written log with times and initials. That log is the legal proof the watch was maintained; a missing or falsified log defeats the entire purpose and can expose the property to citations and insurance problems. Officers must know how to raise the alarm and evacuate, and where the fire department connections are.
Hot work carries its own rules: a trained fire watcher stands by during the work with appropriate extinguishing equipment and continues to monitor the area for a period after work stops — commonly at least 30 minutes, and often longer under a hot-work permit — because smoldering ignition can surface well after the torch is off. This is a distinct assignment from an impairment watch and should be staffed and documented as such.
When a fire system goes down, the property is usually obligated to notify the AHJ and, often, the alarm monitoring company, and to establish the fire watch immediately. A capable provider can mobilize officers quickly — fire watch is frequently an emergency, same-day need — and understands the local AHJ's expectations for interval, logging and reporting.
Fire watch is billed per guard per hour, roughly $28–$45 in the US — above a standard unarmed rate because of the urgency, the code-compliance logging and the coordination involved — and typically runs 24/7 until the impaired system is restored or the work is complete. Because it's often needed same-day, confirm a provider can mobilize fast and document to your AHJ's standard.
Estimated prices per guard/hour. Per guard per hour for code-required fire watch (impaired sprinkler/alarm systems, hot work). Urgency, required logs and marshal coordination bill above standard guard rates; usually 24/7 until systems are restored.
