Executive protection (EP), or close protection, is the discipline of keeping a specific person safe — a corporate executive, a public figure, a high-net-worth individual and their family, or a visiting VIP — through trained agents, advance planning and secure logistics rather than a fixed guard post. Done well, EP is largely invisible: the value is in the threat assessment, the advance work and the seamless movement that prevent an incident, not a show of force. In the US, EP agents work under state guard and, where armed, firearm licensing — a BSIS Guard Card and Exposed Firearm Permit in California, a PERC and Firearm Control Card in Illinois — and reputable practitioners bring specialized close-protection training on top of those credentials.
An EP program can range from a single agent accompanying a principal to a full detail with a protection team, secure transportation, residential coverage and a travel operation. Core elements include personal escort, secure driving, residential and workplace security integration, event and travel protection, and management of the principal's exposure — from public appearances to online and physical privacy.
The distinctive skill in EP is the advance: an agent surveys venues, routes and accommodations before the principal arrives, identifies risks and safe rooms, plans primary and alternate routes, coordinates with venue and local security, and pre-positions so the principal's movement is smooth and low-profile. Secure ground transportation — a trained protective driver and, when warranted, a hardened vehicle — is often the single most important protective measure, since transit is when a principal is most exposed.
Good EP begins with intelligence, not muscle. A protective intelligence and threat-assessment process evaluates the principal's real risk — from stalkers, disgruntled parties, activists or opportunistic crime — and scales the program to it. Over-protecting draws attention and wastes money; under-protecting misses the actual threat. The assessment should be revisited as circumstances, travel and public profile change.
Because "executive protection" isn't a separately licensed category in most states, agents operate under guard and firearm licensing, which makes agent quality the real differentiator. Look for verifiable close-protection training and experience, backgrounds in protective operations, discretion, and armed credentials where the threat warrants an armed agent. Confirm the providing firm is a licensed guard company carrying appropriate insurance.
EP is premium, specialized work. Hourly engagements typically bill $75–$150 per agent, and a full-time close-protection program commonly runs $15,000–$35,000 per month per principal, moved by whether agents are armed, the number of agents, advance and travel demands, and the threat level. A secure or hardened vehicle adds to the cost. Multi-agent details and travel operations scale from there.
Estimated prices per agent/month. Full-time close-protection agent. Hourly engagements typically bill $75–$150/hr per agent; full details (armed, secure vehicle, advance work, threat level) move the monthly program cost. Multi-agent details scale accordingly.
