Guard pricing is usually quoted per post per month, where a "post" is one 12-hour daily shift. True around-the-clock coverage is not one guard — it takes two to four officers to staff a single position 24/7 once relief, breaks, overtime and time off are covered. The most cost-effective programs match staffing to your real risk hours (nights, weekends, close) rather than defaulting to 24/7.

What it costs

Unarmed contract guards bill roughly $22–$35 per hour depending on metro, officer experience and site requirements — about $8,000–$12,800 per month for a single 12-hour daily post. Be skeptical of any monthly quote below roughly $7,900 for a full post: at a $16/hour market wage plus payroll taxes, workers' compensation and insurance, a price below that does not even cover the provider's own labor cost — a red flag for wage theft, misclassification or an unlicensed operator.

Choosing a provider

Confirm the company license and each officer's state registration are current, ask about supervision ratios and how the firm handles a no-show, and require proof of general-liability and workers' compensation insurance.
