Many PI agencies also handle process serving, delivering legal documents with a valid proof of service, and asset searches that support judgment collection and litigation.

Confirm the individual or agency holds a current state PI license (a BSIS PI license in California, an IDFPR Private Detective license in Illinois) and carries professional liability insurance. Then weigh relevant case experience — surveillance, corporate, domestic or financial — and how the investigator documents and reports findings, since evidence is only as good as its lawful, well-documented chain. Discuss retainers and hourly rates upfront, and expect a professional to decline any request that would cross a legal line.
